Izwe Nkosi: I Can’t Breathe

Today is Monday the 8th of June. Exactly two weeks ago, George Floyd was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis, sparking protests around the world. In today’s Lectio 365 prayer (it’s a free and recommended app) South African Izwe Nkosi powerfully and prayerfully helps us explore the reality of racism in our world, and even in our own hearts.

As I enter prayer now, I pause to be still; to breathe slowly; to re-centre my scattered senses upon the presence of God.

Pause and pray

Prayer of Approach
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)

I choose to rejoice today in God’s love and justice for all nations, joining with the ancient praise of all God’s people in the words of Psalm 22…
